How to make a
Strawberry Daiquiri

The Strawberry Daquiri, a summertime favourite the world over, evokes memories of summer days and lazing by the poolside on vacation. When done well, this cocktail is a refreshing and delicious mix that features good rum, fresh limes, and sweet strawberries in a delightful mix. During 80s and 90s, however, the use of artificial and pre-prepared mixers caused this cocktail's reputation to suffer when bars served these cocktails without using any actual strawberries. When made properly though, this drink is remarkable.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ounces rum

  • 1 ounce rich simple syrup

  • 3/4 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed

  • 4 to 5 large strawberries

  • Garnish: edible orchid (optional)

Whats In A Strawberry Daiquiri?

This cocktail is typically served frozen with its constituent’s rum, lime, simple syrup, and strawberries which are then blended with ice to produce a smoothie. It is an icy treat that is perfect for hot summer days and offers the refreshing effects of a smoothie with the kick of alcohol.

You can use a wide range of types of rum in this drink ranging from un-aged types to lightly aged examples. A column-distilled rum (such as found in Puerto Rico), for example, will produce a different flavoured cocktail to that of a rich-type rum from Jamaica or a dry French-style rum. There's no correct choice so, to attain the results you prefer, choose whichever rum you favour for a traditional Daiquiri but always ensure that the taste of the rum doesn't overpower the strawberries.

If you prefer to make your Strawberry Daiquiri in a cocktail shaker, or you don't have access to a blender, you can first combine the strawberries into a syrup in your cocktail shaker and then shake it with ice before straining the contents into the serving glass with a fine strainer to remove any solids or seeds; while the texture won't contain the icy bite for which this cocktail is known, the flavour will be the same.

While the strawberry-based version of this cocktail is the most well-known of the fruit-flavoured Daiquiris it is a cocktail that can be accented with fruits that range from banana to mango and every fruit in between. It means you can get creative when making this cocktail but remember to visit the produce aisle in your local market before you start your blender because while those pre-mixed fruit products are convenient, they can't come close to replicating the refreshing taste of real fruit.
