One thing that should be cleared up at the very beginning of this article is the identity of the Long Island Iced Tea. There is no evidence that this famous drink is actually from Long Island. Its connection to Long Island is, at best, debatable. Another thing is that there isn't an ounce of tea in this drink so describing this cocktail as "tea" is actually a misnomer. However, these two facts should not discourage you from enjoying this drink. Below is your recipe for Long Island Iced tea.

This versatile drink has been a hit since back in 1970s. It is very likely the drink was a smart solution by thirsty boozers who wanted to disguise their booze. It is also possible the cocktail has its origins at a posh bar in Long Island back in the 1970s. Maybe some creative dudes at a TGI Friday invented this amazing cocktail. Whatever the true story is, one fact remains indubitable: You can always find this cocktail in many swank restaurants and bars in Long Island. And for some patrons of these establishments, a night out on the town is incomplete without knocking one over.

On paper, this cocktail should not even exist. Just think about this for a moment. You have four different spirits in a single glass slugging it out along with a bit of cola and lemon juice. This recipe sounds like it was invented by frat-house dudes doped to the eyebrows. Yet, it works and it has continued to work for many years.

The reason for this is quite simple: This drink has succeeded where many cocktails in the same category fall short. Its alcohol content is quite high and this is precisely what many people need every now and then.

Now, there no point in trying to intellectualize this drink. Just recognize it and love it for what it is. This drink is an effective no-frills cocktail that gets the job done in record time. Having said this, it is perfectly in order to add that the addition of lemon makes the drink come alive. If you are planning to make this drink at home, raid the fridge and squeeze in some lemon for maximum effect. In case you want to tame your "tea" a bit, you can cut down on the alcohol and add more cola. The wonderful folks over in Long Island will not be offended by this modification.
